Color The Lowcountry

The Lowcountry. The place I grew up going to, and one that I’m proud to honor through design.

Dots are coiled sweetgrass baskets, framed in a basket weave. Bams are marsh grass going to seed, in an ocean ripple. Craks are shrimp, caught in a net.

Winds are the palmetto and the moon, on indigo, like a pair of blue jeans.

Ten jokers, no two alike — loggerhead, oyster, red drum, Boykin spaniel, live oak, lettered olive, kudzu, marsh tacky, the bridge at sunset, boiled peanuts. Every joker border is a combination of all the others.

And the flowers aren’t flowers. They’re the marsh year — four seasons, each at high and low tide, cross-stitched like the picture of the marsh that hung in your grandmother’s house. Watch the grass go green to gold to tan, and the oyster beds come up when the water goes out.
